It seems that these days, most people know someone with a food allergy. Food allergies have increased nearly 20% in the last 10 years. I heard this story mentioned on the news the other day and found it interesting especially given the fact that my own daughter has a severe peanut and sesame allergy. What is not clear is whether there is truly an increase in food allergies in children or greater awareness by parents and health care providers. Allergy testing is not an exact science in that a positive allergy test does not always mean that that person definitely has a food allergy but suggests that the potential is there. The example I use in clinic is that if I were tested for allergies to everything, they would probably find some items that I tested positive for, but I ate on a regular basis without any problems.
