I am not concerned unless the BMI is above the 85th percentile. The trend of the BMI percentile is also important as most people tend to remain at the same percentile. Put another way, I am not concerned about the child who is at the 75th percentile for BMI and remains there over the years.

The notion that children will eventually sprout up and outgrow their obesity is not based on the facts.

Dear Dr. Nohle, I am still wonder about the 50th percentile cut-off: "children with a BMI above the 50th percentile are prone to be overweight by adolescence."

The 50th percentile cut-off is way low compared to the CDC standard. Please comment on this. Thank you very much.

Dear Dr. Nohle,
We have a 10 month old baby, our first. As first time parents there is alot to learn and we look for our pediatrician for guidance, education, and support. What should we expect from our pediatrician in terms of partnership and engagement in the well being of our child? Growing up I loved my pediatrician. He connected well with children and genuinely showed he cared. When I smiled he smiled back and that made me feel safe. We want the same experience and quality of care and service for our son. Are we expecting too much?

I definitely agree with this. Unfortunately this idea probably does not get thought about when making the decision to not vaccinate.

There is clearly some data to support this. The notion that children will eventually sprout up and outgrow their obesity is not based on the facts.

Children with early-onset obesity in childhood including those with a BMI above the 85th percentile between the ages of 24 and 54 months have a 5-fold greater likelihood of being overweight at age 12. In addition, children with a BMI above the 50th percentile are prone to be overweight by adolescence. [12] Children who are already obese at age 8 years will tend to have more severe obesity, as well as increased morbidity as an adult

Please comment on this . Thanks

We should also remember that we all pay when an unvaccinated child winds up in the hospital for weeks with vaccine preventable diseases such as menigitis, diptheria or whooping cough.

Rob,

Thanks for supporting Moms and families about breastfeeding and for your empathy about the challenges and joys it brings. I am a great proponent of the process and how it benefits all involved. As a woman, there are few experiences to compare to the empowerment of feeding your child in this way. Yet it is not for all mother-child pairs and in the end, loving your child is what matters most, and as you have noted, maternal sanity and well being are critical!

Glad you are there for the babies and Moms you serve at Group Health.
